UCSF’s Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP) announces the 2015 Bay Area Science Festival

UCSF’s Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP) is excited to announce the 2015 Bay Area Science Festival (10/22/15 to 11/7/15). From the science of earthquakes to the physics of lasers, the Bay Area Science Festival promises to make science accessible, interactive, and fun, highlighting the impact of science and innovation on our lives.

WHAT: A celebration of the unique science and technology of the Bay Area. Scientists from our local universities, companies, and museums will share their stories, passion and fun science activities, as they highlight the excitement of science in the Bay Area!

EVENTS: Hundreds of hands-on-activities, provocative conversations, electrifying performances, and tours of cutting--edge facilities. More information can be found at: www.bayareascience.org

Are you interested in being part of the Festival?

We have a number of Opportunities for Scientists to be involved during the Science Festival week (see below) and at our finale event:
Discovery Days at AT&T Park - Saturday November 7, 2015, open to the public 10am - 4pm (note new start time of 10am)

This free event will be the grand finale of the Bay Area Science Festival. It will feature hands-on science for everyone, including interactive activities, comedians, and stage shows to captivate and excite any aspiring scientist.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED at Discovery Days:

To run educational science booths with hands-on activities for families from 9am-12:30pm (includes set-up), 12pm-2:30pm or 2pm-4:30pm (includes clean-up).

Booth Activities include:
1. Cabbage Juice Chemistry- Cabbage juice is an awesome chemical indicator. Its interactions with acids and bases from household items will produce a number of colors. Teach about acids and bases you can find in your own home!
2. Forensic Science: Crimes are solved by using the evidence left behind by the perpetrators. Using fiber analysis and paper chromatography you will help children identify the perpetrator from amongst possible suspects!
3. Floating and Sinking: Help children experiment and problem solve to find out the best design to make their "ship" float and hold cargo. How does it change in fresh water vs. saltwater?
4. Senses: Our senses allow us to detect and experience our environment in multiple ways. These activities allow visitors to experience and engage with three of their senses and to learn more about how the brain collects information through our senses.
5. Dissection Activities: Perform dissections of Cow’s eyes, sheep hearts, or sheep brains, in order to show the public the inner workings of these organs and organism.
6. Hand and Joint models - What would you do without your joints? Your movement and everyday activities would be greatly affected. Kids come and see what that would be like by trying some simple tasks without the use of the joints in their hands.

To help with set up /"load-in" (this means, helping us get materials to booths for all of the 120+ exhibits coming to AT&T Park). This is from 7am-9am, so if you don’t mind waking up early and using your muscles, you can come early and see the AT&T Park in it’s more raw/empty form.

To help with Breakdown/"LOAD-OUT" - this means, after the Discovery Day Event closes at 4pm, helping us to get all the materials from the exhibit booths down to the exhibitor's vehicles. This is from 4pm-6pm
